The Gorilla Hunters by RM Ballantyne

There were old tea chests in a spare room at my grandparents’ house. In them, my younger brother and I found 78 RPM records, Film Fun Annuals and Biggles books that had belonged to our dad. But for the 10-year-old me, the greatest treasure was a mint copy of The Gorilla Hunters by R.M. Ballantyne.

To celebrate International Literacy Day 2017, Penguin Books Australia asked on Facebook, What is the first book you remember reading? I don’t remember mine, but it must have been a Sooty or Joe 90 Annual – I still have Sooty (handed down to my son), but sadly Joe 90 went AWOL long ago.
